Shave Ice, though usually identified with Hawaii, actually has its roots in Medieval Japan where it's still a popular gourmet dessert called "Kagigori". Japanese Plantation workers brought their dessert to Hawaii at the turn of the Century -- using Samurai Swords to shave ice.
